Uh…are you going on holiday or staying at home?

In these digitally advanced days it's really easy to forget that holidays are supposed to be about spending time with your friends and family. Why go somewhere different just to plug in to the same old distractions? Get the kids off their Blackberrys, put the 'out of office' auto reply on your email and push off to places where cell phone signal is terrible – on purpose!

Active Escapes believes in promoting fun, healthy holidays where your children get to experience exceptional environments. Teach them to fish, ride bikes in the mud, go for walks and bomb-drop into chilly river pools. Spend nights under the stars, build fires, toast marshmallows and have a regular family blast; reconnect with your kids and relax in the process. This is what Active Escapes family holiday packages are all about.

At Active Escapes we can build your ideal family holiday package from scratch, including adventure activities like mountain biking, canopy tours, abseiling, rafting and horse riding. Whether you're keen to idly drift down a river in canoes and sleep in tented camps, or want to create a jam-packed adventure holiday to tucker the young ones out, we're happy to make that a reality.

  • kid playing on beach

We recommend the Kosi Adventure Trail for families. With snorkelling, swimming, fishing, canoe trails, turtle tours (in season) & dolphin experiences, you'll never run short of things to do, whilst our 4x4 support takes care of the logistics.

We have ear-marked a wide range of family holiday destinations, with different activities to suit any brood. The convenient KwaZulu-Natal Midlands and the Drakensberg are exceptionally popular with families that like to fly-fish, walk, mountain bike and sit around blazing fires in cosy cottages for their time away. The exciting Wild Coast attracts families who long for a beach break away from the crowds, with curious Nguni cattle and a rural lifestyle to relax into.

More inland, the Eastern Cape Highlands comprise a glorious variety of mountains, rivers and valleys to explore on horse back, by bike or on foot; with beautiful farm style accommodation. Up near the border of Mozambique, Tropical Kosi Bay is a paradise for families who want to mix-up beach time in a warm climate with dune hikes and fishing on the Maputaland rivers. The unique Tugela Valley, one of our personal favourites, incites 'Jock of the Bushveld' feelings and your kids are guaranteed to fall asleep with smiles on their faces after a day of playing hard under paper bark trees, river rafting, fishing and exploring this truly African paradise.

Some Family-Friendly Holidays:

snorkelling trip at Kosi Bay Mouth

For families with non hiking or younger/older members.... or during the heat of summer: we recommend the Kosi Adventure Trail. With a dedicated 4x4 support vehicle, groups can chose to hop-on and off the land vehicle as they chose, with greater emphasis placed on the myriad of activities that can be done enroute. These include: snorkelling, canoe trails, turtle tours (in-season), ocean experiences (diving and deep-sea boat trips to go dolphin & whale viewing), quading, birding, swimming & fishing.
